Metaphor: Metaphor is a type of figure of speech that is used to compare two otherwise unrelated objects. Expressions are used to give effect to a statement. Imagine how bland a statement such as “he was sad” is, compared to a statement describing a “sea of grief.” The metaphor is sure to give the reader a better idea of the depths of grief in this situation.

Examples of Metaphors:

  • Time is money.
  • Boiling mad.
  • Frozen with fear.
  • He spilled the beans.
  • blanket of snow fell today.
  • Anne is the apple of my eye.
  • America is a melting pot.
  • He is a mountain of strength.
  • Her home was a prison.
  • He showered her with gifts.
  • He was boiling mad.
  • How’s life in the fast lane?

  • Keep your eyes peeled.

Figurative Speech:  Figurative Language is the use of words that go beyond their ordinary meaning.  It requires you to use your imagination to figure out the author’s meaning.  For example, if someone tells you that it is raining cats and dogs, you know that there are not actually cats and dogs falling from the sky.  You know it really means that it is raining very hard.

Examples Figurative Speech:

  • The world is your oyster.
  • Under the weather.
  • Justice is blind and, at times, deaf.
  • The computer needs to talk to the printer.
  • Her two braids stuck out like propellers.
  • Cat got your tongue.
  • You’re as grumpy as a bear this morning.
  • I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.
  • The beautiful new car took her breath away.
  • Life is one gigantic merry-go-round.
